Things fall apart - book cover redesign

I took up a graphic design course while in New York recently. At Shillington school. This was one of my favourite briefs we got to complete as it allowed me to be creative not just in graphics but also in photography. We had to redesign a book cover of our choice. I chose 'Things fall apart' by the father of African literature: Chinua Achebe. I got to use some African fabric in this which I was really happy about. I hope you like it also!

Dzidefo (inspire me) Exhibition

Dzidefo (inspire me) Exhibition

Tuesday, August 3, 2010
6:30pm Esco Art Gallery,
386-388 Brunswick St, Fitzroy (Australia)

Dzidefo, meaning ‘inspire me’ in Ewe - a dialect from Ghana (West Africa) of which Edem Badu is originally from.

The inspiration behind her work is a collection imbued by moments, lessons and epiphanies; Edem recreates and freezes time as she signs off 'msbadu' against a vibrant backdrop of an afrostyle.

Her work opens up an element of creativity and liberation for individuals to interpret any way they feel. Bringing art back to its simplest form, she challenges the viewer to give their interpretation, as such challenging them to inspire her - with their natural soulful views.

Her collection has slowly come together over years of experimenting with a diverse range of colours and techniques, styles and mediums. More so, having a story behind each piece.

Drawn to the raw, natural and earthy feel, most of her pieces are created on wood board with a touch of cultural elements - remaining connected to her roots.

Edem currently resides in Melbourne, Australia. Self taught Ghanaian born artist, she has slowly embraced her creativity allowing others to experience her work. Expressing herself in the form of art and poetry.

Edem explains "It's easier to express how I feel visually than verbally. I create for me; and I believe people seem to admire the results. I find that sometimes we get caught up in society’s perceptions of what we should be, rather than what we can be, and what we are. If I can inspire others with my work by not worrying about social perceptions and ideologies but by doing what feels right in my soul, naturally, then I have accomplished what I came here for".

This is an event not to be missed!

Dzidefo will be showing at Esco Art Gallery, official opening: Tuesday 3rd August 2010

Esco Art Gallery
386- 388 Brunswick Street
Fitzroy, Victoria

Contact Edem if you have any questions.

Looking forward to seeing you. Spread the word!

Soul Sista

My lovely sister, Aseye, was the model for this piece - she's the soulest sista! :)

Exposed. Take me as I am

I think this is the most honest, uncovered and unprotected I can be. Although it leaves me at an absolute vulnerable, somehow that has transcended to an ultimate inner liberation.

Forgive me

The colour purple

Inspired by the books- 'purple hibiscus' and 'the colour purple'.
Spiritually, there is beauty everywhere. You just have to stop and embrace it. Take your time. Breathe in the freshness of the new day; listen to the rain; touch the contours of his back; admire her unique and awkward ways; absorb the flow of poetry against the backdrop of that acoustic soul. Draw in to the blush of the rainbows palette. Experience liberation through admiration of natures creativity.

*I used my beautiful cousin as my model for this piece - thanks Ella!
